The South West was the highest recruiting region to the GARFIELD study. Local recruitment by GP practices dominated cohort five and just pipped the East of England to being the top recruiters to the entire study. Of the total UK enrolment of 3,922 patients (Cohorts 1-5) the SW contributed 682 participants. The UK also did really well coming third overall out of 35 countries.

Dr Chris Gibbs and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust research team were the top UK centre for recruiting Atrial fibrillation patients to the European Society Cardiology-lead registry.

The UK almost doubled the total 600 patient recruitment target nationally and in less than 12 months!

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust Hepatology research team were the highest UK recruiters to the Abbvie Endurance 3 study looking at the efficacy and safety of a combination of drugs to treat adults with chronic Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 3 Infection. Fourteen patients completed screening and treatment.

Livewell Southwest exceeded their recruitment target of 20 for the PD Safe study all within seven weeks of approval and opening.

Senior Research Practitioner Rena Truscott hailed attendance at the Parkinsons Disease exercise groups, referrals from consultant clinics and use of the Dendron register was pivotal to their success.

Special mention was made of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust for increasing their recruitment (wte/month) by more than four patients per month to the Pressure 2 study. PHNT was ranked second and NDHT fifth in the top five UK centres.

Dr Claire Bethune of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust recruited the first patient globally to a Phase III clinical trial looking to Evaluate Efficacy, Pharmacokinetics and Safety and Tolerability of a new drug to treat people with primary immunodeficiency.
